In Harry Potter, one of my favourite parts are the spells. I love how they have the power to do almost everything. But there are certain spells in the Wizarding World that are always handy when you have those moments. Whether it be mending injuries or simply opening a door, the following charms are always there for you.

1. Reparo

Hermione Reparo

Broken glass. Torn clothing. Dented car. Reparo is the best spell for this. Household disasters, all repaired in an instant. Now, hours of fixing are no more. Reparo is a handy spell when the unexpected happens. Occulus Reparo mended Harry’s glasses, and it also fixed Percy’s own spectacles too after he made a fool of himself in front of his idol, the one and only Mr Crouch. Personally, I think reparo is the most useful because it can fix a bunch of items easily without going through a bunch of trouble just to replace them.

2. Accio

Harry Accio

Feeling lazy? Don’t want to get up? Then accio is your go-to spell. No more getting up and grabbing the TV remote, and no more losing glasses! It summons whatever you wish to summon, even if it is not in direct sight. This spell is amazing for finding things you’ve lost, or you didn’t even know existed in your bedroom. It can also save you from Lord Voldemort.

3. Alohomora

Hermione Alohomora

Alohomora is the opposite of colloportus, and this charm can open doors closed by its opposite. Can’t find your keys? You don’t have to look anymore. Why use keys? Keys are overrated when alohomora is in the question. Also, this is the perfect way to break in to a place where you technically shouldn’t be as a first-year.

4. Scourgify

Scourgify

Do you ever not want to clean the table? Or wash your clothes after you get a big jam stain on it? Well, scourgify is the perfect spell for you. Just cast this spell, and you’ll be saved a ton of time that could have been wasted on cleaning. When Neville’s Mimbulus Mimbletonia squirted everywhere, Ginny used this spell to clean up. Too bad that Cho showed up before the gunk was cleaned up…

5. Lumos

Harry Lumos

Don’t want to turn on the light? Simple. Lumos is your spell. Though it doesn’t exactly turn on the lights, it activates your wandlight, and that’s basically the same thing. It’s like your personal voice-controlled flashlight.

6. Nox

Snape Nox

As opposed to lumos, nox will turn off your wandlight. Again, you don’t have to stand up to turn off the lights; just use lumos and nox as your light source. The next time you want to turn on and off the lights for a scary movie, keep in mind that nox is always a handy spell.

7. Ferula

Lupin Ferula

Ferula is used for bandaging up wounds and supporting broken bones with splints. Why wait in the Emergency Room when you can just use this spell? Again, when accidents happen, this is one of your go-to spells. Ron’s broken leg wasn’t healed from this spell, but when Lupin used it he immediately felt less pain. Painkillers.

8. Colloportus

Colloportus

Haven’t you been told many times to close the door when you leave a room? Well, that’s no more now. Using colloportus, you can close the door – and have no one be able to open it. This is a really useful spell, and it saves you time from walking to the door and manually shutting it. In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, this was the spell they used to slow down the Death Eaters. So this also doubles as a lifesaver charm too.

9. Episkey

Luna Episkey

Episkey is perfect for minor injuries. It can also help you to relieve some pain. So, the next time that you break your nose from sports, this spell can fix things up in a jiffy. Broken toes and broken noses can’t be very different, after all. And when Demelza Robins gets a split lip from Ron, this was a perfect spell to get Quidditch practice going, as well as to stop Ron from continuous embarrassment.

10. Impervius

Harry Impervius

Looking for waterproof items? Well, using impervius can easily turn anything into a water-repelling object. When it’s raining, and your glasses are all wet, and all you want is to see through the water staining your lenses? You’ve got your solution. This, in fact, was performed by third-year Hermione, though the team didn’t win the match due to the Dementors coming onto the Quidditch pitch and causing Harry to fall off his broom.
