Top 10 Harry Potter Quotes That Evoke an Emotion

Harry Potter is the type of series that can make readers feel many ways. There are some quotes in Harry Potter that make me feel a certain way, whether it’s happy, sad, or extremely comical. For example, Dumbledore’s quotes either make me feel hopeful, sad, or like I’m about to laugh. The quotes below are what I associate with each emotion.

Happy Quotes:

1. “Don’t let the Muggles get you down!” –Ron Weasley, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Chapter 1

I think this quote from Ron is happy and cheerful because in the letter, he describes his family trip to Egypt, and he’s reminding Harry not to let the Dursleys discourage him. Personally, I find this quote also funny because no matter what the Dursleys do, they will somehow find a way to make Harry miserable. But on the upside, at least Harry feels better about his birthday (which doesn’t exist in the Dursleys eyes)

2. “We did it, we bashed them, wee Potter’s the one, and Voldy’s gone mouldy, so now let’s have fun!” –Peeves, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Chapter 36

Peeves Deathly Hallows Happy 02

I like this quote because this was right after the Battle of Hogwarts, and evidently Peeves is ecstatic about ‘Voldy’s’ downfall. However, this makes me feel slightly sad because of all the cool characters that died in this fight. I liked the song and the lyrics, though. I suppose Peeves now would worship Harry…?

Sad Quotes:

1. “To have been loved so deeply, even though the person who loved us is gone, will give us some protection forever.” – Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Chapter 17

Dumbledore Philosophers Stone Sad 01

This quote, without a doubt, is one of the saddest. Dumbledore is talking to Harry while the latter is recovering from his fight with Quirrell. He explains that Lily’s love for her son was so strong to the point that Quirrell, bursting with ‘hatred and greed’ couldn’t touch him. Also Voldemort was possessing him so there’s that too.

2. “Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living, and above all those who live without love.” – Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Chapter 35

Dumbledore Deathly Hallows Sad 02

When Harry sees Dumbledore at King’s Cross in The Deathly Hallows, he also sees the part of Voldemort’s soul in him in the form of a dying infant. Harry wanted to do something about it, but nothing could be done, as Dumbledore says. This quote is also sad to me, though less than the previous one. Dumbledore tells Harry he should pity people like Voldemort, those who live without loving. Now that’s sad.

Angry Quotes:

1. “I DON’T CARE! I’VE HAD ENOUGH, I’VE SEEN ENOUGH, I WANT OUT, I WANT IT TO END, I DON’T CARE ANYMORE!” –Harry Potter, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Chapter 37

Harry Order of the Phoenix Angry 01

This comes from when Dumbledore is talking to Harry about Sirius. Harry, driven by grief and rage from Sirius’s death, destroys most of Dumbeldore’s possessions and yells at the Headmaster. This quote, to me, is more sad than angry but I put it under this because he is angry and he is yelling. But this is sorrowful to me because it is about Sirius and his death, and I liked Sirius’s character. Now I’m sad.

2. “Then you should have died!” roared Black. “Died rather than betray your friends, as we would have done for you!” –Sirius Black, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Chapter 19

Sirius Prisoner of Azkaban Angry 02

This quote is angry because Wormtail betrayed Lily and James because he was scared of Voldemort. I didn’t like Wormtail at all, though at the end I did feel bad for him, just a bit. Anyways, Sirius was yelling at Wormtail for saving his own skin rather than dying for his best friends, which is what they would have done for him. I felt angry when I read that Wormtail framed Sirius and betrayed the Potters to Voldemort.

Hopeful Quotes:

1. “Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if only one remembers to turn on the light.” –Albus Dumbledore, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Dumbledore Prisoner of Azkaban Hopeful 01

This is very hopeful to me because Dumbledore is talking about how to stay happy even when things seem horrible. He uses turning on the light as an example. The light is happiness, and the dark is sadness. Turning on the light will fill the room up with happiness, whereas if the room is constantly dark, it will be filled with sadness and anger. I really like this idiom.

2. “You are a symbol of hope for many, Harry. The idea that there is somebody out there who might be able, who might even be destined, to destroy He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named — well, naturally, it gives people a lift.” –Rufus Scrimgeour, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, Chapter 16

Scrimgeour Half Blood Prince Hopeful 02

Okay, so I know that this quote came from a very despicable character, but it’s kind of true. It would be a hopeful speech to just anybody, but to Harry, this is manipulation. Scrimgeour wants Harry to play along with the fact that the Ministry is doing a ‘great’ job at rounding up suspected Death Eaters. But Harry is a symbol of hope: everyone looks to him, and everyone wants to befriend him suddenly at Hogwarts. However, the way that the Minister said it, it was weird.

Funny Quotes:

1. “I am a wizard, not a baboon brandishing a stick.” – Seamus Finnigan, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Chapter 17

Seamus Half Blood Prince Funny 01

Chats about Apparition can turn into this? Seamus was talking about how excited he was to Apparate so he can get back at his cousin for constantly bothering him when the latter was allowed to Apparate. Then, while waving his wand around dreamily, he sprayed water at Professor Flitwick and earned himself a bunch of lines. Well done, Seamus. Whenever I read this part, I find it so funny and I sometimes laugh to myself.

2. “I’m not putting them on,” said old Archie in indignation. “I like a healthy breeze ‘round my privates, thanks.” –Archie, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Chapter 7

Archie Goblet of Fire Funny 02

This is my favourite quote because when I first read it, I was so confused. Then I realised: the man wasn’t wearing anything else! Being 9-10 years old at the time, I found this hilarious, and whenever I read this I would laugh so hard. It has become one of my favourite parts of Harry Potter. Enjoy the breeze, Archie!
